How Do I Get Amazon Brand Registry in the US and Canada? (Step by Step)

Amazon Brand Registry steps
Short answer

To get Amazon Brand Registry, you first need a trademark for your brand name or logo that is pending or registered in a country where you want to enroll. Then you apply in the Brand Registry portal with your Amazon account, enter your trademark details, and confirm the link to your trademark. Timing depends on how fast your trademark office moves and how fast Amazon reviews your request, so no one can promise a date. Most no answers come from small mismatches or a trademark that does not fit Amazon's rules.

What Amazon Brand Registry is

Amazon Brand Registry is a free program for brand owners. It lets you prove to Amazon that a brand is yours. Once Amazon accepts you, you get more control over how your brand shows up in the store.

Amazon says the program offers tools to help protect your brand and manage your product pages. Features can change over time, so read Amazon's current Brand Registry page for the latest list.

In plain words: it is a way to tell Amazon, "I own this brand, and I am the right person to speak for it."

Why a trademark comes first

A trademark is legal protection for a brand name or logo. It stops other people from using a name that is too close to yours for similar products.

Amazon asks for a trademark because it needs proof that the brand is yours. A business name alone is not enough. A website is not enough. A product label is not enough.

The exact kind of trademark Amazon accepts can change. Check Amazon's current rules before you apply. Look at three things in particular:

  • Amazon says it accepts an active registered trademark or a pending one (you have applied, but the office has not finished its review).
  • Amazon takes word marks (text) and design marks (a logo with words, letters, or numbers). A plain picture with no words may not work.
  • Which countries does the trademark cover?

A trademark only works in the place that issued it. A US trademark is for the US. A Canadian trademark is for Canada. If you want to sell in both, you will want to look at both.

Step by step: getting Brand Registry in the US and Canada

Step 1: Pick the brand name you will stand behind

Choose the exact name or logo you want to protect. Use it the same way on your products, your packaging, and your Amazon pages. Changing it later can cause problems.

Step 2: Search for similar names

Before you apply, look in the trademark databases for names like yours. In the US, the trademark office is the USPTO. In Canada, it is the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). If someone already holds a name that is too close to yours, your application may be turned down.

A trademark lawyer or agent can help with this. You are not required to hire one in every case, but many brand owners find it useful because trademark rules can be tricky.

Step 3: Apply for your trademark

File your application with the trademark office in each country where you want protection. You will describe your brand and the kinds of goods it covers.

The goods you list matter. If your brand sells pet toys, list pet toys, not a long list of things you do not sell.

Step 4: Check what Amazon accepts

Open the Brand Registry page and read the current rules. Look at which trademark offices Amazon works with, and which kinds of marks it takes. Also look at Amazon IP Accelerator. It connects brands with trademark law firms and can give faster access to some Brand Registry tools while your trademark is pending. Programs can change, so confirm it is still offered before you count on it.

Step 5: Apply in Brand Registry

Create your Brand Registry account with your Seller Central or Vendor Central login. Use an account your business owns, not a personal one you may lose access to. Only the trademark owner can submit the application. Then:

  1. Enter your brand name exactly as it appears in your trademark.
  2. Enter your trademark number and the office that issued it.
  3. List the product categories your brand sells in.
  4. Upload a photo of your product or its packaging. The brand name must be on it for good. A sticker or a loose label does not count.
  5. Add your website and where you sell, if Amazon asks for it.
  6. Review and submit the form.

Step 6: Verify you own the brand

After you submit, Amazon sends an email with a link to the contact on the trademark record. Often that is the owner or the lawyer or agent who filed it. That person must open the link and confirm within 7 days. If they do not, Amazon declines the request and you must apply again. Amazon may also ask for details about who makes or sells your product. Make sure the email on the trademark record is one someone can open.

Step 7: Wait for the answer

Amazon will accept, ask for more, or decline. Keep an eye on your email and your Brand Registry case page.

How long does it take?

There are two clocks:

  • The trademark office clock. This is how long the USPTO or CIPO takes to review your application. It can be many months, and it varies. Check each office's website for current wait times.
  • The Amazon clock. This is how long Amazon takes to review your Brand Registry request. It can vary too.

No one can promise an exact date. If you read a blog or ad that gives a firm timeline, check it against the official sources.

The mistakes that cause a no

The name does not match

The brand name in your Brand Registry form must match your trademark. A small change in spelling, spacing, or style can cause a problem. Copy it exactly.

The trademark is the wrong type

Some brand owners have a trademark that does not fit Amazon's rules. For example, the mark may be a plain image with no words, when Amazon wants a word mark or a logo with words. Read the current rules to be sure.

The trademark is for the wrong country

A US trademark does not cover Canada. A Canadian trademark does not cover the US. Match your trademark to the store where you want to enroll.

The goods do not fit

If your trademark covers one type of product and you sell another, Amazon may question the link. Make sure your list of goods is a good fit for what you sell.

You cannot verify

If the contact on the trademark record is old or belongs to someone who no longer helps you, the confirm link may not reach anyone in time. Update the record or ask the lawyer or agent for help.

Weak or missing proof on your products

Amazon asks for a photo that shows your brand name on the product or packaging. Use real photos, not stock images or computer-made pictures. The name should be printed or attached for good. A sticker or a loose label is not accepted.

Using someone else's account

If an agency or helper sets up Brand Registry in their own account, you may have trouble getting control later. Make sure the account is yours or that you have clear access. Ask who will be the owner.

A simple example

Imagine a small business that makes wooden cutting boards. The owner sells them under the name "Oak Hollow." The owner sells in both the US and Canada.

First, the owner searches the USPTO and CIPO databases for names close to "Oak Hollow" in kitchen goods. Nothing blocks them, so they file in both countries and list the goods they sell: cutting boards and related kitchen items.

Then they read Amazon's current Brand Registry rules and check whether a pending trademark is enough. They open an Amazon account for the business and fill in the form. They type the brand name exactly as it appears on the trademark. They check that the email on the trademark record is one they can open.

Amazon sends a code. The owner enters it. Then they wait for Amazon's answer. If Amazon asks for more, they send clear photos of the boards with the name on them.

This is only an example. Your path may differ, and no result is guaranteed.

What if I do not want to do this alone?

You have a few choices:

  • Do it yourself. This costs the least in fees, but it takes your time and care.
  • Hire a trademark lawyer or agent. They can handle the trademark side. They charge fees, so ask about cost first.
  • Work with an Amazon partner. Some partners help with the Amazon side. Ask what they do and what they charge. Our guide on how to find a good Amazon partner has questions to ask.

AceeNova is a Calgary-based Amazon partner. We buy brand products, improve listings, and pay for ads, with no fee to the brand. We are not a trademark law firm, so we cannot file your trademark. If you are weighing your options, our post on selling yourself, using an agency, or selling to a reseller lays out the trade-offs fairly.

Why Brand Registry matters for other problems

If strangers are selling on your listing, Brand Registry may give you tools to deal with it. Read who the unknown sellers on your listing are and how to stop them for more. If your sales are slow, enrollment alone will not fix that. See why your Amazon sales may be low.

A short checklist
